Jim Olarte creates unique, imaginative, and grand-scale structures using macramé knotting techniques. His artworks convey a meditative, ritualistic impulse through his repeated process of meticulously knotting leather cord, various ropes, and found marine objects from years of beachcombing.

 

In June 2025, CASA CDM presented “Ritual Object,” an exhibition of new works by Jim Olarte focusing on his material intervention with driftwood and stone. Olarte is a Laguna Beach-based artist who has been a key creative community member since 1980, when he founded Locals Only (1980-2000), the iconic vintage store.
